It is no longer a secret that the Coalition for the Recovery of Congolese People’s Assets (CORAC), in agreement with key civil society organizations, has expressed its desire to see the sanctions against Mr. Dan Gertler lifted. This coalition made this known on Wednesday, July 16th, in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
This stance is justified by two facts according to CORAC. First, by the publication of an article in the Bloomberg newspaper, on July 15, 2025, of an Israeli arbitration award from 2024 indicating that there was no corruption in the Dan Gertler case in the Democratic Republic of Congo while affirming that the various payments to local actors were not intended for bribes but for community development projects.
Next, the fact that the Congolese government had to sign an important agreement with Mr. Dan Gertler in which he transfers significant mining and oil assets to the Congolese state marks the beginning of a new cooperation where private actors no longer only see their profits but also return the assets to the Congolese state with a view to carrying out projects for social needs.
