COPPER EXPLORATION IN KATANGA: BARRICK MINING MARKS THE FOOTSTEPS

From gold production to copper production, there’s only one step, according to many miners. It was in this context that Cyrille Mutombo, Managing Director of Barrick Mining DRC, held a press conference in the main tent of the Karavia Hotel in Lubumbashi on the second day of DRC Mining Week, which took place over three days from June 11 to 14, 2025.

For Cyrille Mutombo, one of the major panelists and miners in the sector indicated that it is no longer a secret to mining operators that the Barrick Mining Company has already been fully established in the province of Haut Katanga since 2024 after having benefited from the mining cadastre of research permits centered in the territories of Sakania and Kipushi where it is conducting copper exploration and other geological studies.

He was keen to specify to media professionals that his company is not new to the copper production sector, as it already produces copper elsewhere and possesses considerable expertise.

In Zambia, for example, the Lumwana mine is a good demonstration of the group with a not insignificant investment, he argued.

At the same time, Cyrille Mutombo elaborated on the exploration phase, stating: “For now, we are in the exploration stage, meaning research and not exploitation. And if the research, coupled with results, proves positive, we will move on to the second stage.”

And you will notice that this is why the research takes a lot of time and will determine the continuation of the work.”

He concluded his remarks by highlighting that the participation of the Barrick Mining group in the 20th anniversary of the DRC Mining Week coincides with the launch of copper exploration in Haut-Katanga, a particularity of the group for this year.
